Only PDFs with a text layer; scanned files need OCR first
About this tool
People convert PDF to Word for one reason: to get text they can edit again. This tool extracts the text layer of every page with pdf.js, organises it into paragraphs in reading order, and writes a standard .docx with the docx library. For text-based content - contracts, papers, reports, notices - the words come through complete, editable and copyable, ready for Word or WPS.
Honest positioning: this is an editable-text export, not a layout conversion. Fonts, columns, headers, images and tables of the original PDF are not preserved; the result is continuous, re-flowed text. PDFs whose internal text order is unusual (complex two-column layouts, design files) can come out with interleaved paragraphs. Scanned PDFs have no text layer at all - they need OCR first, otherwise the output is empty.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does the Word file look different from the PDF?
- This tool exports editable text: it re-organises the extracted text into paragraphs and does not rebuild the original fonts, columns, images or tables. If your goal is editable content, that is exactly what it delivers; pixel-level layout fidelity is beyond any purely browser-based converter.
- Does it work with scanned PDFs?
- No. Scanned pages are images with no text layer to extract, so the output would be empty or nearly empty. Run the file through OCR first to turn the pictures into text, then edit it in Word.
- The text order came out wrong - what can I do?
- Some PDFs store text in an order that differs from the visual one; complex two-column layouts and text-box-heavy designs are the usual culprits. The characters themselves are not lost - rearrange the paragraphs manually, or edit from the original document if you still have it.
- Is PDF to Word free here? Any limits?
- Completely free - no membership, no page or usage limits, no watermark on the output. Conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded, so confidential documents stay on your device.
- What software opens the converted .docx?
- The output is standard Office Open XML (.docx), which Microsoft Word 2007 and later, WPS Office, LibreOffice and the mainstream mobile office apps all open and edit natively.
