About this tool
A slow web page, an email attachment over the size limit, an upload form that rejects your file - the fix is usually to compress the image. This tool re-encodes pictures with the native Canvas API in the browser and offers two modes: compress by quality, or compress to a target size in KB where the tool automatically finds the closest quality and dimension combination. The original size, compressed size and percentage saved are shown the moment it finishes.
Images are processed one at a time - download the result and drop in the next one. The quality slider applies to JPG and WebP; PNG is lossless and is reduced by re-encoding or shrinking instead. If a picture is wider than the maximum width you set, it is scaled down proportionally. The image only ever exists in your device memory: no uploads, no signup, no watermark.

How to use

Frequently asked questions
- How do I compress an image to a target size in KB?
- Switch to "Compress to a target size" and enter the value, for example 100 KB. The tool searches for the closest quality and dimension combination. If the target cannot be reached it says so and reports the smallest achievable size; a width limit or switching the output to JPG / WebP usually helps for PNG sources.
- What does maximum width do?
- If an image is wider than this value it is scaled down proportionally, with the height calculated automatically. 1200 to 1600 pixels is plenty for web content and 400 to 800 for avatars. Leave it blank to keep the original dimensions.
- Does compressing lose quality? How do I keep it sharp?
- JPG and WebP are lossy encodings, so heavier compression means more loss. A good rule of thumb: 70% to 80% is usually indistinguishable for web display, while printing and archiving want 90% or above. Compress once in quality mode, compare, then decide - the original file is never modified.
- Do PNG dimensions change after compression?
- In quality mode the dimensions stay the same and the file is only re-encoded. In target-size mode PNG may be shrunk step by step to reach the goal because it is lossless, which costs sharpness. For small files, switch the output to JPG or WebP instead.
- The compressed image is larger than the original?
- That means the source was already heavily compressed and re-encoding added overhead. Lower the quality or set a maximum width and try again - the tool tells you exactly how much the size increased.
