Cut segments from animated .gif files

About this tool

Only the last three seconds of a 20-second GIF are useful; a meme is too long and only one stretch is funny; a downloaded animation opens with watermarked frames you want gone. This tool asks for two time points: start and end. Plain seconds (1.5) and clock formats (0:03, 00:00:02.5) both work; a blank start means 0 and a blank end means the final frame.

Frame rate and width can be adjusted while cutting: if the excerpt is still too heavy, drop frames and shrink width in the same step instead of visiting the compressor. Output stays GIF, re-encoded per frame against an optimized palette to protect quality.

The cutting runs on FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser: nothing is uploaded, so chat logs and meme material stay private.

Features

  • Start/end trimming with seconds or mm:ss, blanks allowed on either side
  • Live output-duration display - what you see is what you get
  • Optional frame-rate and width changes in the same pass
  • Per-frame palette re-encoding keeps quality intact
  • Fully local processing with live progress

How to use

  1. Drop the GIF - total duration and frame count are read
  2. Enter start and end times (e.g. 0:02 to 0:05)
  3. Adjust frame rate and width if wanted
  4. Click Cut clip, preview and download

Frequently asked questions

Does GIF timing work like video timing?
Yes. Each GIF frame carries its own display duration, and the tool positions cut points on that timeline; the excerpt plays at the original speed. Cut points snap to frame boundaries, so the maximum drift is one frame display time - usually a few hundredths of a second.
Can it make the GIF smaller at the same time?
Yes - lower the frame rate or shrink the width while cutting; stacking both helps a lot. For extreme savings (color-count reduction, palette optimization) use the GIF Compressor, which exposes the full set of dials.
Can I also reverse it or add captions?
This tool focuses on trimming. Reverse playback and captioning are not offered yet; if your source is a video, pick the segment directly in Video to GIF and generate the final animation in one step.
